Bedzzz, formerly known as City Mattrees, opened its doors in 1987 with its first store in Orleans, Ontario. By 1992 the company had grown to 4 stores all located in the Ottawa region. The company is a locally owned family business. The Desrochers family has been in the mattress and furniture retail business for over 30 years. On the 60's and 80's the family owned a furniture store in rural Québec in Plaisance about an hour east of Ottawa. After selling the business in the mid 80's and moving to Ottawa, they decided to specialize in the mattress category. The specialty store concept allow for greater focus to one segment of the home furnishing industry and therefore the customer can be served with a higher level of expertise.

This strategy spilled over into the sofa category when the Family decided to open 2 sofa stores and Sofa World was launched in the late 90's. The specialty store idea was equally as successful in the sofa category and today the Desrochers family operate both Bedzzz and Sofa World retail stores as parallel businesses.

More recently in 2005 Bedzzz (formerly know as City Mattress) received a complete re-branding makeover. After spending considerable time and energy surveying customers to find how we could improve the bed buying experience, the Desrochers' created a new and unique way of shopping. The stores were completely renovated to create a new modern showroom to better compare prices and features. Special in-store features were placed to enhance the buying experience. The whole store was redesigned from the customer's point of view. Finally the new store concept was so distinguished from regular mattress stores that even the name was changed to reflect the extent of the transformation and so City Mattress was reborn as Bedzzz.
